Description

Flamex PF-2 Fire Retardant

Product Overview:

The exterior structure of your home is the first line of defense against flames—especially in high-risk areas. Flamex PF-2 wood fire retardant is an exterior formula made to defend wood against the impacts of fire and is also safe for the environment.
Standard wood stains change the appearance of wood without providing protection. Flamex PF-2 on the other hand, protects against ignition sources, hot embers, and airborne coals. Whether you want to protect your home to defend it from wildfire embers, or are a builder who has to follow Class A code requirements, Flamex PF-2 will be a perfect fit.

Key Features at a Glance:

  • Class A Fire Rating: Verified by Intertek Laboratories under ASTM E-84 standards.
  • Invisible Protection: Dries clear to preserve the natural beauty of wood.
  • Environmental Defense: Provides UV protection and excellent water repellency.
  • Pest Control: Unique formula offers built-in termite resistance.
  • Non-Toxic: Safe for residential use around families and pets.

Why Choose Flamex PF-2?

Uncompromised Aesthetics and Durability

Many fireproofing products on the market leave a chalky residue or require heavy, opaque applications. Flamex PF-2 is different. It is a clear-drying formula that allows the natural grain of your wood to shine through.
Beyond fire safety, this product acts as a high-performance wood preservative. It penetrates deep into the substrate to create a barrier that resists water intrusion, which helps prevent the growth of mildew and fungus. Crucially, the treated surface is breathable; it does not trap moisture inside the wood, preventing rot while maintaining water repellency

Advanced Termite Resistance

Outdoor structures are often under attack from more than just fire. Flamex PF-2 fire retardant provides a dual layer of defense by incorporating termite resistance directly into the fire retardant formula. This added benefit extends the lifespan of your decks and fences by deterring one of the most destructive pests in the United States.

Technical Specifications & Certifications:

When it comes to fire safety, certification is the only metric that matters. Flamex PF-2 has been rigorously tested to meet the highest industry standards.

Class A Fire Rating (ASTM E-84)

Flamex PF-2 has undergone the ASTM E-84 Surface Burn Test at Intertek Laboratories, utilizing a 25-foot tunnel furnace to simulate severe fire conditions. These results classify Flamex PF-2 as a Class A fire-rated material, placing it in a superior safety category compared to untreated red oak or fiber cement board.

Verified for Exterior Use:

Many fire retardants wash away with the first rain. Flamex PF-2, however, was specifically tested according to ASTM D5401, the standard for “Water Repellent Wood Coating Testing” by Home Innovation Research Labs. This ensures that the product maintains its protective integrity even after exposure to weathering and moisture

Versatile Applications: Where to Use?

Flamex PF-2 is highly versatile and effective on both new and old wood surfaces, as well as vertical and horizontal applications.

Ideal for Residential & Commercial Structures:

  • Decks and Patios: Essential for areas where outdoor cooking or wildfire risks are prevalent.
  • Siding and Trim: Protects the building envelope from radiant heat and embers.
  • Fencing and Posts: Prevents fire from traveling along fence lines to the main structure.
  • Garden Structures: Perfect for pergolas, gazebos, and outdoor furniture.
  • Specialized Roofing Applications: Uniquely, Flamex PF-2 is also effective on difficult-to-protect roofing materials, including wood shingle roofs, roof sheathing, and even thatch, mulch, and straw

Application & Maintenance Guide:

Achieving a Class A rating requires proper application. Follow these steps to ensure maximum protection.

Preparation and Coverage:

  • Surface Prep: Ensure the wood is porous, clean, and completely dry.
  • Coverage Rate: Apply at a rate of 125 sq ft per gallon.
  • Tools: Use a sprayer for even application. Shake or mix thoroughly before use.
  • Restrictions: Do not mix with other products, tints, or dyes

Environmental Conditions:

Timing is critical. Apply Flamex PF-2 only when air temperatures are 50°F or above and are expected to remain so for at least 24 hours. The treated area must be protected from rain for a minimum of 48 hours to allow for a complete cure

Staining and Finishing:

You do not have to choose between safety and style. Once Flamex PF-2 has cured for a full 48 hours, the wood can be stained with a water-based product. This allows you to customize the color of your deck or siding while maintaining the fire-retardant undercoat.

Long-Term Maintenance:

Weathering will eventually degrade any exterior finish. We recommend that you test and reapply every 3–5 years, or more frequently in areas with high rainfall or moisture. To verify if reapplication is needed, test a small, inconspicuous area to ensure the finish is still active.

Pro Tip: Always refer to the specific manufacturer’s product data sheet and application instructions, as applying the required thickness or number of coats is critical for the product to successfully meet fire safety standards
