FAQ’S
What’s the difference between Contego and other fire barrier coatings?
Contego is the superior choice when it comes to fire protection coatings. With nearly a decade of proven performance, Contego has taken advantage of groundbreaking advances in polymer technology that set it apart from other products on the market. Applying Contego is as simple as painting a wall – no special tools required.
It goes on smoothly like high-quality latex paint and bonds tightly to a variety of surfaces thanks to its innovative polymer base. Plus, Contego is completely safe for use around your loved ones – it’s non-carcinogenic, non-dermatic, and free of harmful solvents and VOCs. In fact, just two coats of Contego provide the same level of protection as 150-200 mils of traditional intumescents.
And the best part? Contego is cost-effective, making it a smart choice for anyone looking to protect their property from fire damage. Choose Contego and enjoy peace of mind knowing your space is safeguarded by the best
What kind of substrates can Contego be used on?
Contego’s effectiveness has been demonstrated across a diverse range of substrates, including structural steel, wood (both dimensional lumber and manufactured woods like OSB, MDF, Plywood, etc), drywall, spray polyurethane foam, aluminum, and more. It is important to note that Contego should not be applied on Styrofoam or EPS, as these materials are liquid fuel at temperatures below 200 degrees. Unlike other intumescents, Contego reacts at approximately 360 degrees, ensuring optimal fire protection for a variety of surfaces. Trust Contego to safeguard your property with its proven track record of reliability.
What colors are available?
Contego is only available in a crisp white hue, but don’t let that limit your options. This versatile product can easily be tinted or top coated to match any color scheme. Its clean and attractive appearance makes it the perfect choice for finishing ceilings. And unlike other intumescents on the market, Contego boasts a flawless finish that won’t fade or discolor with time. Trust Contego to provide long-lasting protection with a beautiful finish every time.
Can I add a tint to the primer?
Contego’s high solids content ensures that it does not react to color tinting like regular latex paints. You can safely add up to 5% by volume, resulting in a light pastel shade at most. However, tinting is unnecessary unless you are using it to distinguish layers between coats, as Contego can easily be top coated for added protection.
Do I need to use a top coat with Contego?
For general interior use, a topcoat is not necessary unless a specific color is desired. However, for exterior or unconditioned spaces, a topcoat is always essential for optimal protection and longevity. Rest assured, a topcoat is non-negotiable when it comes to outdoor applications.
What kind of top coat is recommended?
See approved topcoat list in “Downloads” page.
Is the Contego product UL tested
Contego’s rigorous testing process includes adherence to nine different standards, including UL-263 and UL-CS101. However, we confidently assert that Underwriters’ Laboratories is not our primary testing laboratory for a clear reason: UL does not serve as the basis for any building code. It is ASTM that holds that distinction. We take pride in the fact that Contego is classified as a product on UL.com, but our commitment to code-based standards means that our testing is conducted by established, accredited, audited, and certified laboratories. Our partner labs are globally recognized for their excellence and enjoy international acceptance.

Will the Contego product freeze?
It certainly can, and that could ruin the product, so it should be handled accordingly.
Do you guarantee this won’t burn?
There are no guarantees in preventing fires. Everything will eventually burn – even materials like granite can turn into lava when exposed to extreme heat over time. Contego offers the highest level of safety by constructing a strong char barrier that effectively separates fire from fuel sources. This unique feature not only insulates structural steel but also significantly delays any rise in core temperature, ensuring the utmost protection against structural integrity loss. This protection is key in preventing structural damage.
